Love Birds

An American woman travels deep into the Amazon jungle discouraged with her marriage and on a quest for adventure, wild nature and a new sense of belonging. She unexpectedly meets Noe, an amazonian painter who teach her what true belonging really means.

Ashley, a middle-aged American woman, is sick of the city...and tired of waiting for her workaholic husband to notice he’s pissing his life away. She’s ready to live life to the fullest, so she hops a plane to the most unlikely and wild environment she could...the Amazon jungle. She befriends Noe, an adventure guide and painter, who takes her deep into the jungle to explore, not only the biodiversity, but ultimately, herself. They spend 6 intimate days together where each reveals a hidden self neither of them show to the outside world. In their sharing, they find understanding, companionship, and Truth: that real belonging is found in being-in-our-longing...together.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

Love Birds was filmed on location in the Amazonia Basin of Peru under the tutelage of Werner Herzog during a workshop with Black Factory Cinema. A group of emerging, independent filmmakers were selected to join Herzog as he returned to the jungle he loves and hates..and the location of some of his greatest films.

Love Birds came about after being introduced to Noe at the camp we stayed at during our filming. We each had to complete our own film in 7 short days. Although Noe is a lovely man, he was almost too lovely and I struggled to find a story beyond him being a gifted painter. Until the 6th day. It took taking him to a memorable place for him and his girlfriend to trigger the emotions..and his deeper need to figure out where he belonged. I edited my first version until 2am the morning the films were due and it came out much more of a haiku of sorts. But upon returning to the US, I did a re-edit for 4 weeks...revealing a truer, more complete version of the story.

Alone Together

What happens when people are forced to isolate, slow down, and listen to their own thoughts?

In the first few months of the Pandemic, an anonymous voicemail box was opened and shared around the United States for people to say anything they wanted during lockdown. The result was a deeply intimate look into the human experience when forced to live in isolation; the candid anger, the questions about Self, and the philosophies of what it means to be human on this planet. Weaving together voicemail messages creates an evocative, intellectually stimulating narrative around a more human centered understanding of what the Covid Crisis truly meant for people in the year 2020.
